However, owing to shortage of technical means, poor maintenance and especially the 1996 and 1997 tidal waves, part of the land reclaimed from the sea became once again unfit for farming.
In June 2002, we launched a vast project to rehabilitate over 2.000 hectares of alluvial land to make it suitable for rice culture. Our assistance included supply of technical means, equipment, construction materials, and coordination of the works. The European Commission Aid Cooperation Office granted us a supplementary period of 12 months to finalise the project.
The works completed, our partners benefited from the equipment purchased to realize this project and, thanks to equipment and the new skills acquired, they then launched rehabilitation of a second polder.
