Philippines (2014...2015)

Context

When Typhoon Yolanda struck the Philippines on 7 November 2013, winds averaging 270 km/h and gusting to more than 315 km/h swept across the country from east to west. It is considered the strongest typhoon of the season and one of the most violent ever recorded.

In view of the obvious need to support the revival of socio-economic activities and the uneven distribution of humanitarian aid, Triangle Génération Humanitaire undertook a fact-finding mission to several islands, targeting an area far from economic centres and humanitarian aid.

TGH in Philippines

As soon as it arrived in January 2014, TGH made a diagnosis in the barangy (smallest administrative area in the Philippines) of Sulangan, in the municipality of Guiuan, in the province of Eastern Samar.

On the field, TGH found a population of 4,950 people, most of whom depend on fishing for their livelihood and have been severely affected by the disaster. The teams on the ground counted 570 out of 630 boats destroyed. Since then, TGH has focused on supporting the rebuilding of the fishing fleet to ensure that the local population can resume their economic activities.
