Providing food for schoolchildren in Aden

Soutien au cantine scolaire à Aden

Food insecurity and malnutrition are significant concerns in Yemen, and particularly for students in schools who usually attend without consuming any meal. The continued depreciation of the local currency to record-low levels has exacerbated inflation, severely diminishing the purchasing power of families and schoolchildren, making basic necessities increasingly unaffordable.

Since August 2024, TGH is implementing a project funded by CIAA (Comité Interministériel d’Aide Alimentaire) in 12 schools of Aden. All of them benefited from adequate cooking equipment and canteen rehabilitation.

Six schools were selected for pilot activities, which included training of the canteen staff on students’ nutrition and school feeding scheme.

However, since December 2024, teachers have gone on strike as a protest against their very low salaries, leading to school closures and depriving pupils of access to the meals provided by TGH.

In response to these challenges, TGH has revised its approach by distributing food baskets containing the same essential ingredients used in the school meals that meet the students’ nutrition needs for one month.

This allows students to receive sufficient food supplies in a single collection, ensuring continued nutritional support despite ongoing disruptions.

As a result, 7 373 schoolchildren (5 603 boys and 1 770 girls) received a food basket in February 2025.

Furthermore, the program prioritizes inclusivity by ensuring that pupils with disabilities also have access to this essential food support.
