Located in the north-west of Myanmar, Chin State is one of the poorest and most vulnerable states in the country. The local population, who are mainly rural (86%), poor and dependent on farming for their livelihood, are isolated in this very mountainous region affected by recurrent and serious natural disasters (cyclones, floods, landslides). Living in an area that is difficult to access, this population has faced a number of challenges over the years, including infrastructure problems, poor economic development, food insecurity and regional conflicts (with around 7,500 people displaced in Paletwa Township). In addition, the increase in violence has forced many people to leave their homes and has also contributed to a widespread sense of insecurity in a region where resources and opportunities are scarce and the risk of natural disasters is high.
As part of this project, Triangle Génération Humanitaire and its partner, RCDF, are working with host communities which are also affected by the conflict and displacement. These isolated rural communities, located on the Paletwa-Samee axis and along the border with Matupi Township, suffer from a structural deficit in food production and dependence on agricultural activities for their subsistence. This project aims to improve the lives of vulnerable populations by sustainably strengthening their means of production and providing access to improved agricultural practices. In addition, the activities carried out by TGH contribute to poverty reduction among the host communities through the development of crops with high economic potential.
The project’s activities include the rehabilitation and reinforcement of irrigation infrastructure, the supply of high-performance soil preparation equipment, the installation of off-season vegetable gardens and technical support. In addition, protective fencing is planned to protect the cultivated areas.
This 12-month project aims to improve the resilience of rural populations (Matupi and Paletwa – Samee axis) by focusing on diversifying and increasing farm incomes and supporting productivity in this sector.
