Programme details

The project is part of TGH’s global humanitarian response to the earthquake in Syria. It draws on TGH’s 5 years’ experience in implementing multi-sector projects, and almost 30 years’ experience in responding to emergency situations around the world. Following the earthquake, many people lost their homes and found refuge in temporary collective shelters provided by the authorities.

Since 6 February 2023, there have been more than a hundred such shelters in Aleppo.Due to the lack of appropriate sanitary facilities and waste management in these shelters, there is a high risk of the development of epidemics such as cholera, leishmaniasis, scabies and lice.TGH is concentrating this specific intervention in the Salah Al-Din district of Aleppo.

The project aims to :

  • Improve access to hygiene and sanitation for displaced earthquake victims living in emergency accommodation centres (maintenance kits, hygiene kits, hygiene awareness).
  • Promoting access for residents of the Salah Al-Din district to a functional and robust sewerage system (excavation of the sewer network, supply and installation of high-strength polyethylene (HDPE) pipes and the necessary manholes).

As part of this project, TGH will provide cleaning kits for 6 months in 15 emergency accommodation centres in the targeted neighbourhood. Hygiene kits will also be distributed in the centres and in schools in the area. In addition, hygiene awareness sessions will be organised for refugee residents. Finally, TGH will be rehabilitating the sewage system in the Salah al-Din district.
