The program adopts an integrated approach, encompassing Nutrition, WASH, Health, Protection, and Food Security and Livelihoods, to respond to the complex and evolving crisis in Sudan—a crisis that combines recent conflicts with ongoing regional, national, and global challenges. TGH focuses on the WASH, Protection and Food Security and Lifelihoods components.

In April 2023, the transition to a civilian government was abruptly halted by the outbreak of war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Unlike previous conflicts, this war has impacted not only the peripheral areas but also the capital city, Khartoum. As of December 2023, critical needs have emerged among 5,855,848 internally displaced persons (IDPs) and 1,532,350 people involved in mixed cross-border movements, within the broader context of 25 million people in need, as identified by OCHA (HNO 2024). The primary needs include food, water, hygiene, sanitation, health, nutrition, and emergency shelter—without intervention, these unmet needs risk escalating the crisis further.

In response, TGH, PUI, and SI are committed to delivering integrated, life-saving interventions tailored to support conflict-affected populations in Sudan, helping them ensure their survival and recover from the trauma of war. This intervention leverages the consortium’s operational capabilities, which have been redesigned and adapted to the country’s evolving context, in collaboration with national NGOs and coordinated with other international organizations.

By April 2024, the situation has worsened, with an additional one million people displaced, no end to the conflict in sight, and a deepening food crisis affecting 18 million people who are now highly food insecure, according to FAO. In light of these developments, the consortium has decided to upscale its intervention to reach more beneficiaries and expand its coverage to additional localities.

Despite the challenging access situation in Khartoum, TGH support 4 local ERRs (Emergency Response Room), starting with Emergency Water Provision & Emergency Food Provision, to provide critical life-saving assistance, focusing on emergency water and food provision, implemented by ERR volunteers with technical support and guidance from TGH’s Program team as needed.
