The project « Integrated response to needs in Education, Child protection and, WASH for underserved communities, including the most vulnerable school-aged girls and boys, in Aleppo, Dar’a, and Rural Damascus »

project aims to enhance resilience and address critical needs in Education, Child Protection, and WASH for underserved communities, particularly vulnerable school-aged girls and boys, in Aleppo, Dar’a, and Rural Damascus. Through an integrated, multi-sectoral approach, it combines educational support, child protection measures, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services to meet the urgent needs of communities affected by years of conflict.

The Education component will improve both access to and the quality of formal and non-formal education in 4 schools across the 3 governorates. For children at risk of dropping out and out-of-school children (OOSC), the project includes back-to-learning campaigns, Non Formal education sessions including catch-up classes, and remedial education. Teachers will receive training to better support children’s learning and well-being. School infrastructure improvements will also be implemented, including classroom repairs, installation of solar power systems, and provision of essential learning materials, to create safe and conducive learning environments.

The Child Protection activities will offer psychosocial support and child protection services (case management), addressing the specific needs of children exposed to trauma or facing risks like child labor and early marriage. Structured psychosocial support sessions will promote children’s emotional resilience and improve their overall well-being. In collaboration with communities, the project will establish Parent-Teacher meetings and Community-Based Education and Child Protection Committees to foster a supportive and safe environment for children, with targeted sessions to raise awareness on child protection and positive parenting. These activities will be done in the 4 schools targeted.

In the WASH sector, this project rehabilitates 3 water systems, including boreholes and pumping stations to restore safe water access for people across the target areas. TGH also rehabilitates 1 sewage network to reduce waste water accumulation and reduce health risks. In addition, hygiene promotion sessions, conducted in schools, will encourage safe hygiene practices among children and staff, reducing waterborne diseases and promoting healthier environments. Solar panels will also be installed at key water facilities, ensuring a sustainable water supply.

In summary, this project responds comprehensively to the pressing needs of vulnerable communities in Aleppo, Dar’a, and Rural Damascus, aiming to support 114,800 individuals with improved educational opportunities, safe water access, and essential protection services. Through a community-centered approach, it not only addresses immediate needs but also builds the foundations for lasting resilience and community-driven recovery.
