Programme details
The project proposes an integrated approach to improving diet and resilience to food shocks at farm, Ri and household level in Kowon and Kumya counties in the DPRK.
According to the joint FAO/WFP rapid assessment carried out in March-April 2019, 40% of the population is food insecure. In addition, recent years have shown the acute vulnerability of food production to external events (climatic conditions, input shortages), the effects of which are compounded by structural problems.
In terms of water and sanitation, it is estimated that 33% of the population does not have access to drinking water and 19% of the population does not have access to basic sanitation facilities, according to data from a 2017 survey published by the Central Bureau of Statistics and UNICEF.
The project therefore proposes to :
- Increase the quantity of vegetables and fish distributed to children’s institutions by increasing production in cooperatives and fish farms.
- Increase the production capacity of households in order to improve their diet and their resistance to food crises.
- Improve post-production practices, equipment and infrastructure to avoid losses and promote the availability of a diversified diet throughout the year.
- Improve WASH practices and infrastructures, in order to reduce water and sanitation-related diseases that exacerbate the population’s poor nutritional situation.
Under this project, TGH is targeting the Kowon and Kumya regions, where needs are particularly high. In each region, TGH is supporting 1 cooperative farm, 1 fish farm and the Children’s Institutions and Hospitals supplied with vegetables and fish by these farms.
