Programme details

This project, entitled Improvement of integrated livelihoods and nutritional response to drought and conflict-affected populations in Kilbati, Fanti and Awsi zones, Afar region”, aims to contribute to the reduction of morbidity and mortality associated with drought and conflict-related food insecurity in the Afar region of Ethiopia.

This project brings together several NGOs: Première Urgence Internationale (lead), Acted, Mercy Corps and TGH, with the support of the Comité interministériel d’aide alimentaire (CIAA), the decision-making body for French programmed food aid (under the supervision of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs).

PUI, Acted and TGH are working together to provide a comprehensive and integrated response to the needs of the Afar people most affected by conflict and the effects of climate change.

The project provides integrated, community-based acute malnutrition management in the areas most affected by Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) in the Afar region.

It also proposes innovative ways to help affected and food-insecure communities build their own resilience to environmental shocks and restore meaningful livelihoods.

TGH and its implementing partner Mercy Corps are working together to ensure that the nutritional needs of vulnerable and food-insecure families in Erebti with children suffering from severe acute malnutrition (SAM) and households with pregnant and lactating women suffering from moderate acute malnutrition (MAM PLW) are met. This will be achieved through the provision of unconditional financial support to improve nutritional outcomes in targeted areas. The partnership will support systematic screening for malnutrition among children under five and pregnant and lactating women, particularly in Mercy Corps’ operational sites in Erebti Woreda.

In addition, the CIAA project partners

Première Urgence Internationale: supports the local health system to ensure access to quality clinical management of acute malnutrition and is involved in the prevention, detection and referral of malnutrition by supporting the network of local community volunteers, while providing support to families of children suffering from severe acute malnutrition (food and hygiene kits).

Acted: ensures that food-insecure households can meet their immediate food needs through MPCA. The NGO is also focusing on revitalising degraded land, improving agricultural productivity and managing natural water resources more effectively.

Finally, the project aims to promote community resilience, rural livelihoods and economic empowerment by supporting local agricultural cooperatives and agro-pastoralists through capacity building and income generation opportunities, with the overall aim of reducing food insecurity in the Kilbati, Fanti and Awsi and Afar regions.
