Programme details

Our work in the Kharaz camp and in the Basateen district (Aden) has focused mainly on social work, with two main strands:

Social assistance

Two teams of social workers based in the camp and in Basateen regularly visit people identified as very vulnerable (unaccompanied children, isolated elderly people, people with disabilities) to provide them with specific material or financial assistance (food, hygiene equipment, etc.) and, depending on their needs, refer them to the appropriate services (administration, hospitals, etc.).

Community work

The aim is to encourage refugees to become active players, rather than simply receiving assistance. Our activities continued in 2005 with community centres (in Kharaz and Basateen) and vocational training (sewing, weaving, basketry, etc.), educational activities (literacy courses, language courses: English, Arabic, Somali and IT), leisure activities (games, video room, library, etc.) and sports, as well as the development of vegetable gardens and a kindergarten in Basateen.

TGH has also worked in Basateen on AIDS prevention.
