In the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, older people are among the most vulnerable populations, as they are beyond the reach of most of the services and resources available to the general public. The crucial elements of active and healthy ageing are a quality socio-economic environment, access to medical and health services, and the implementation of activities that enable older people to benefit from social inclusion while generating income.

This programme strengthens the capacity of KFCA, our local partner, to promote the social inclusion, dignity and well-being of the elderly, who represented 14% of the population in 2014. It is a continuation of the work already carried out by TGH and KFCA, and focuses on three areas:

The first component deals with improving the governance, accountability and visibility of KFCA at all levels, in order to stimulate the development of holistic care policies for the elderly. The KFCA team will receive support in developing its 2020-2025 strategy, as well as training and equipment to strengthen and diversify its skills. In addition, throughout the programme, exchange visits will be organised to develop its national and international network.

The second part develops and strengthens the Old People’s Homes and OPHs through renovation work, the distribution of furniture and equipment, as well as staff training and management. The aim is also – by improving the food situation for visitors, carers and staff in two of the Old People’s Homes – to consolidate the operational capacity of 5 Old People’s Homes, and to support their integration into the national health system.

The third and final strand focuses on the social inclusion of older people by encouraging the formation of Self Help Groups, which will carry out activities to support other older people and set up small-scale projects to generate income, among other things. Finally, social events organised by older people themselves will build a resilient community based on cohesion, inclusion and solidarity.
