Programmes

Iraq

In September 2003, a Triangle Génération Humanitaire team went to Baghdad to evaluate the local needs and the humanitarian situation. Staying true to the association’s principles, we chose proximity with the population and, once established in Baghdad, our team encountered local actors and organisations to prepare its first programme.

Thanks to the support of the French Foreign Affairs Office and its Delegation to Humanitarian Action (DAH), TGH began by distributing « winter kits » (mattresses, blankets and heating equipment) to 1.103 families previously identified as extremely vulnerable in the area of Hurriyah, Baghdad. This wintertime project was implemented on request of the Iraqi youth league, a community organisation dedicated to helping disadvantaged people.

A second project financed by the Humanitarian Aid Department of the European Commission (ECHO) consisted in rehabilitating the drainage evacuation system in the Hurriyah area of Baghdad. 400,000 inhabitants directly benefited from the program.

As well as providing help to the most disadvantaged people, we further aim to maintain our relationship with local aid organisations in an effort to strengthen their autonomy and empower their ability to respond (training, knowledge transfer…).

In addition, through this project, we can effectively assess the situation of these families in the perspective of implementing longer term programmes.

Cleaning the Mains Drainage Waters System in Hurriyah - Baghdad

The presence of our team in the district of Hurriyah allowed us to perfect our assessment of the population’s priority needs. This led us to create a cleaning project of the entire drainage system.

Launched in March 2004, the project featured several activities:

  • Rehabilitation of the 9 vehicles used by the municipality to clean the drainage systems
  • Repair and maintenance of 4 pumping stations
  • Cleaning a 190 kilometre-long system for evacuation of used waters and rain waters
  • Training the staff involved in maintenance of the drainage systems about security issues
  • Provide security and maintenance equipment to the municipality of Khadamiya,
  • Distribution of 2.400 hygiene kits (covering the needs of 14.400 people)
  • Implementation of an awareness campaign about safe use of the drainage system and the relationship between hygiene (clean sanitary environment) and health

This campaign involved the Town Hall of Baghdad, the municipality of Khadamiya, 8 schools, 4 health centres, 3 mosques and the Youth Committee of the Hurriyah district.

400.000 inhabitants of Hurriyah directly benefited from this project.

TGH, with support from the United Nations Development Programme, subsequently offered to increase the benefits of this project by organising garbage collection in Hurriyah. This action has been repeatedly postponed. Indeed, the complexity of the situation in Iraq and the degradation of security conditions mean such projects are extremely difficult to implement.

Distribution of Winter Kits

In the aim of helping the most destitute families, TGH organised an emergency distribution project to help them face the winter and the rainy season. We supplied kits containing blankets, mattresses and heating systems to 1.103 families, e.g. 6.978 people.

Some 400,000 people live in Hurriyah, one of the poorest areas of Baghdad. The families who have settled here live in the most precarious conditions: the water drainage system does not operate, there’s little access to education, the houses are in a terrible state, electricity is hard to come by, poverty is increasing…
