In order to meet the urgent water, hygiene and sanitation needs of the populations newly returned to their locality of origin, this programme includes: the construction of new water infrastructure in the village of Dar el Salam; the conversion of a hand pump into a water supply point in the northern district of Golo; the restoration of wells and the testing and monitoring of water quality.

In a second phase, awareness campaigns aiming to improve hygiene, sanitation and refuse collection practices will be carried out by 16 community members (two thirds of whom are women), selected by the TGH teams. Collective activities will be organised in the villages of Golo, Buri, Jokosti and Bari Hari (including a jerrycan cleaning event). Three schools will be provided with hygiene items (e.g. soap bars, hand wash basins, safe water stock, etc.).

Finally, in order to reduce dependence on humanitarian aid, training will be provided to volunteers on the management and maintenance of hand pumps and supply points. The creation of Water Management Committees (in which the participation of women will be encouraged), managerial and technical training and the construction and supply of a spare parts store will ensure the participation of beneficiaries and their empowerment as well as capacity building at institutional and community level.
