With more than 4,460,000 people returning to their villages of origin and more than 1,444,000 IDPs in Iraq (figures as of 31 October 2019 - IOM DTM), needs in terms of child protection are substantial in the IDP camps around Mosul. A significant number of people have remained or returned to live in the camps due to the lack of basic public infrastructure and services to meet their basic needs in their villages of origin.

In IDP camps, children are vulnerable and exposed to increased risks such as child labour, early marriage, school dropout, violence, neglect, abuse and health risks. TGH is one of the main actors in child protection in federal Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan. The organisation has been working in IDP camps around Mosul since 2016 and has developed an integrated approach to child protection that respects the cultures and gender of the people taking part in the programmes.

In accordance with the strategy of the 2019 Humanitarian Response Plan, TGH’s activities focus on capacity building of local structures, promoting the community approach in coordination with national authorities (Ministry of Social Affairs, Directorate of Social Affairs, Ministry of Education and Directorate of Education).

The project is built around three main axes:
