More than 1.8 million people are currently displaced in Iraq, including 700,000 in Iraqi Kurdistan. TGH is working to improve child protection management by the Iraqi Social Affairs Services (MoLSA-DoSA) in federal Iraq and in the autonomous region of Kurdistan.
The programme is divided into four areas:
The first one strengthens governance: selection of tools and policies to be developed and disseminated, a toolkit including a job description for a social worker, supervisor or head of a child protection entity, a code of conduct and a list of vocabulary and technical concepts in Kurdish, Arabic and English, to be used by MoLSA/DoSA, and to be promoted with humanitarian actors.
The second area concerns two series of training courses. The first one - on case management, psychosocial support, information management and community-based child protection - is aimed at DoSA social workers and child protection partners (particularly local NGOs). The second one is for actors, in and outside the camps, who are not involved in child protection (government staff, local NGOs and community members).
The third area concerns supervision and capacity building. TGH provides professional coaching to DoSA teams in order to coach them on a daily basis, to support them in different situations and to provide them with advice.
The combination of training and coaching approaches has proven to be effective, particularly in relation to autonomous training and/or train-the-trainer interventions
Finally, the last area concerns the organising of workshops and discussion forums between social workers to discuss the main child protection issues.
