According to the 2016 World Food Programme report on food security in Chin State, the situation in Matupi Township is assessed as "severe" and "urgent" regarding access to food. Households use 70% of their income to buy staple food, and their diet consists mainly of rice. This local shortfall in agricultural production and diversification is a chronic phenomenon, which worsened with the passage of Cyclone Komen in August 2015. The destruction of most irrigation infrastructure by major landslides has forced many farmers to abandon the cultivation of their food plots.

In order to meet these needs, this project - implemented by Triangle Génération Humanitaire in partnership with its local partner, the Burmese NGO Ar Yone Oo (AYO), which specialises in rural development, natural resource management, access to drinking water and sanitation - involves 10 villages in Matupi Township.

This project develops an approach that includes: enhancing farmers' resilience capacities by securing rice production means and developing cash crops activities. In addition, the project contributes to the sustainable use and protection of the region's natural resources by strengthening the local population's knowledge of environmental issues, while involving local authorities in management and protection processes, in particular through awareness-raising and training activities.

The action, which is planned over 3 years, improves and secures agricultural production in the Matupi region through a dual integrated approach of resource protection and natural risk management.
